De Nieuwe Ooster
This is a serie about the daily work on the cemetery "De Nieuwe Ooster."
The staff of "De Nieuwe Ooster" asked me to photograph their "Allerzielen", which is a gathering in honor of the death. From then on I became obsessed by the cemetery with its rich history and went for a series of morning walks. My idea is to capture the normality around death. It is such a big part of our lives, but it seems to be so kept away. The people working at the Nieuwe Ooster are familiar with the daily ceremonies around death: Choosing of an urn or a grave, how to arrange the music, starting the machine that smashes the bones in the crematorium. "When working here for a long time you know no better than that all people are equal. They all at one point will become familiar to death," a gravedigger told me.
